The energy efficiency of a wastewater treatment plant can be maximised through the use of anaerobic digestion (AD). The methane produced when sewage sludge is digested can be used to power a combined heat and power (CHP) generator, which in turn provides electricity for the site and the hot water that can be passed through a heat exchanger to assist the digestion process. This can eliminate the need to purchase fossil fuels for plant heating processes and significantly reduces costs.
