COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Length: 4 days (8 hrs/day)
The Gas Engine Basics course will give participants an understanding of the operating principles of a gaseous fueled engine and differences unique to the gas engine. Gas specific terminology will be defined and unique components will be identified as well. Participants will be introduced to Caterpillar programs and websites necessary to keep a gas engine operating at optimum performance levels. The participant will have an opportunity to adjust the gas engine to meet emission requirements. Approximately 50% of the course time will be spent in the shop.

PPE Required

Participants must provide their own safety glasses, steel toed footwear, gloves, hard hats and fire-retardant coveralls with reflective stripe.

PREREQUISITES

It would be beneficial for participants to have a fundamental working knowledge of either diesel or gasoline powered engines.

It is highly recommended for participants to have an active CWS Login for access to Caterpillar secure websites.

Finning training department will supply a laptop for participants to use while in the training course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Course Objectives: After completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Correctly define gas engine terminology

  • Correctly identify gas engine components

  • Describe the effects of faulty engine components to engine performance

  • Calculate the effects of specific site conditions to engine performance

  • Develop a site specific engine performance data sheet

  • Correctly access information required for lab activities

  • Adjust the engine to meet emission levels

Successful completion will be an ongoing assessment of classroom participation and lab exercises.
