COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Length: 4 days (8 hrs/day)
The Gas Engines Advanced course will focus on electronics and control system diagnostics. Participants will be required to access Caterpillar programs and literature to diagnose and troubleshoot diagnostic codes, active events and control system malfunctions on a running gas engine. Approximately 75% of the course time will be spent in the shop.

PPE Required

Participants must provide their own safety glasses, steel toed footwear, gloves, hard hats and fire-retardant coveralls with reflective stripe.

PREREQUISITES

- Gas Engine Basics course.
- An active CWS Login for access to Caterpillar secure websites.

Please note: The Finning training department will supply a laptop for participants to use while in the training course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Use a digital multimeter to successfully troubleshoot engine faults.

  • Use Caterpillar schematics to successfully troubleshoot engine faults.

  • Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician program to successfully diagnose, troubleshoot and repair electronic faults.

  • Use the Caterpillar GERP program to determine the correct values for a properly performing gas engine.

  • Connect an exhaust emission analyzer and ensure the engine is adjusted correctly to meet emission levels.

Successful completion will be an ongoing assessment of classroom participation and lab exercises.
