COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Length: 4 x 8-hour days or 3 x 10-hour days
Target Audience: Heavy Equipment Technicians

Caterpillar is continually coming out with new electronic controls and monitoring systems. The object of the Machine Electronic Controls course is not intended to be specific to a current system, but to teach students the basic operation and troubleshooting of electronic systems in general, and the proper use of available literature, schematics and tooling to properly troubleshoot and calibrate machine systems.

PPE Required

Participants must provide their own safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, gloves, hard hat, hearing protection, and coveralls with Hi-Visibility Markings.

PREREQUISITES

Electrical Systems (S4).

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Understand and practice basic electrical principles
  • Properly use a digital multimeter
  • Test and repair machine wiring
  • Access and interpret ECM fault codes
  • Perform basic computer commands within ET
  • Use the Electronic Technician (ET) tooling
  • Understand Flash downloading
  • Locate & identify all electronic control input & output components
  • Troubleshoot machine electronic controls
  • Calibrate and adjust electronic components
  • Troubleshoot CDL and CAN Datalinks

Successful completion of a written examination with a passing grade of 80%.
