Finning autonomous mining featured at Caterpillar’s Investor Day 2025
Finning's autonomous mining operations were highlighted at Caterpillar's Investor Day 2025. Denise Johnson, President of Caterpillar Resource Industries, showcased Finning's Canadian work as a key example supporting their ambitious goal to triple autonomous trucks globally by 2030.
Caterpillar featured our partnership with Suncor at the Syncrude operations, encompassing Mildred Lake and Aurora North minesites. This expansion builds on our significant 2023 milestone when we achieved full autonomy of 81 Cat 797 trucks at Imperial Oil's Kearl operation, one of the largest autonomous mining fleets in the world.
Imtiaz Wadiwale, Caterpillar Site Solutions Manager, described the partnership approach: "We're developing a deep understanding of what means most to Suncor—cost per barrel, site productivity, and long-term performance."
The team has a dedicated Caterpillar fleet management and condition monitoring on 20 Cat 797 ultraclass trucks at Syncrude.
Being featured at Caterpillar's Investor Day reinforces our position at the forefront of autonomous mining technology. Our work demonstrates how strategic partnerships and proven expertise deliver measurable improvements in safety, productivity, and cost efficiency.
By the Numbers:
- 81 Cat 797 trucks fully autonomous at Kearl (2023)
- 2,000+ autonomous trucks worldwide by 2030 (Caterpillar goal)
- 20 Cat 797 trucks currently under agreement at Syncrude
