Finning Employee Carries the Canada Winter Games Torch

As a gold sponsor of the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Finning is proud to be a part of one of the largest sporting events in Canada and thrilled to be a participant in torch relay events held throughout communities across Western Canada. Patricia Nelson, manager of external training, was selected as a torchbearer for the Lacombe leg of the relay on February 2. “What an honour it was to be chosen to carry the Canada Winter Games torch,” says Patricia. “The community involvement was amazing, and our Finning team from Red Deer was there to celebrate at the end of the journey. I met so many people and was grateful for all the friends, family and neighbours who came out in support of the games.”

Patricia carried the torch for about one kilometre of the route on a very cold Saturday morning. “It was -33C with the wind chill, but with all the enthusiasm of the people along the route cheering us on you hardly noticed the cold,” says Patricia. The wind, however, proved a bit of a challenge. “I was trying not to let the torch blow out, but I had to keep it at a safe distance so my toque wouldn’t melt,” laughs Patricia.

By the end of the route, there were dozens of people, a large parade of cars and a police escort accompanying the torchbearers. “It was very moving to see so many people come out and get involved. It shows the strength of our community and our commitment to supporting Canadian athletes,” says Patricia. “I was very proud to be a part of it.”
