With the introduction of the 3000 series Cat engine, Caterpillar's industrial engine product line has broadened from 20 hp to 22,030 hp. This allows Finning Power Systems to meet any industrial applications where you need power to handle materials or transport goods such as water pumps, locomotive re-powers, off road vehicles, or large mining shovels.
Our capabilities in this area were clearly demonstrated on a locomotive re-powering project in which Finning Power Systems, on a co-managed basis with the customer, upgraded three old locomotives for a major forest company. The original 1,200 hp engines were replaced with fuel efficient, microprocessor-controlled 1,500 hp Cat 3512 diesels. During installation of the high tech engines, Finning Power Systems diesel electricians completely re-wired the locomotives with new control circuits, control panels, and wheel slip sensors. The installation also included a redesigned engine canopy, new engine mounts, frame modifications and weight modification. Finning engineered and carried out the work and the result was a 25% reduction in operating costs.
