COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Length: 4 days (8 hrs/day) or 3 days (8 hrs/day)

This course covers the Caterpillar Powertrain and Control Systems and will give the Technician an understanding of how the various Hydraulic, Torque converters, Torque Dividers, Transmission, Hydrostatic and Control Systems operate. The Technician will gain an understanding of the related components, and basic troubleshooting of the various systems.

PPE Required

Participants must provide their own safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, gloves, hard hat, hearing protection, and coveralls with Hi-Visibility Markings.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic power train components.

  • Identify the type of hydraulic control valves used in the power train.

  • Explain how each type of basic hydraulic control valves operate.

  • Identify components found in a single stage torque converters and a torque divider.

  • Describe power flow through a torque converter.

  • Describe power flow through a torque divider.

  • Define vortex and rotary oil flow.

  • Explain the purpose of the torque converter inlet and outlet relief valves.

  • Describe four types of torque converters.

  • Describe a variable capacity torque converter hydraulic system

  • Evaluate the test results from a torque converter stall test.

  • Identify the types of power shift transmissions used in Caterpillar machines.

  • Trace the power flow through a simple power shift transmission.

  • Explain clutch operation in a planetary and countershaft transmission.

  • Identify four types of clutch materials used in power shift transmissions.

  • Recognize the need for managing fluid cleanliness in the transmission hydraulic system.

  • Explain the operation of the 4 Caterpillar power train control systems

Successful completion of a written examination with a passing grade of 80%.
