Finning expands Irish power generation sales to meet grid demand

As Ireland and Northern Ireland face growing demand for reliable power amid increasing grid pressures, Finning UK & Ireland has announced the strategic appointment of Tomás Corr as Retail Sales Engineer for the Irish market. The move is aimed at reinforcing the company’s retail electric power sales across the region in response to evolving energy requirements.

The Irish electricity grid has experienced significant strain over recent years. According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), in 2024, Ireland’s electricity consumption reached approximately 31,900 GWh, representing an increase of 4.3% from the previous year. This is only expected to rise, with peak demand for electricity having climbed to a record 6,024 MW in early 2025.

This growth is largely driven by the expansion of data centres, which are projected to consume 27% of Ireland’s electricity demand in 2025, alongside the rapid deployment of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and the increasing impact of extreme weather events. In addition, Ireland’s commitment to a lowcarbon future led to the closure of its last coalfired power station in June 2025, accelerating the transition to renewable sources but increasing demands on grid reliability.

Based in the Republic of Ireland, Tomás covers both Ireland and Northern Ireland, bringing extensive experience from his previous role at Cummins, where he developed strong customer relationships and technical expertise. His remit includes the sale of Cat® diesel generator sets from 20 kVA to 1500 kVA, serving wholesale partners, major hire companies and end users.

Tomás will support a range of applications requiring standby power, such as hospitals and water utilities, as well as prime power for quarries, industrial sites and data centres. In addition, he will sell directly into the retail sector, including general contractors and domestic trade users. Solutions on offer include the GC range for fixed standby use, the EO range for critical applications, and Stage Vcompliant units to meet stringent EU emissions regulations, suitable for the hire industry.

Martyn Drinkwater, Senior Sales Manager – Electric Power UK & Ireland, emphasised the strategic importance of this appointment:

“The growing complexities of the Irish market call for robust, flexible power solutions. Strengthening our retail sales capability with Tomás at the forefront enables us to better serve the expanding needs of customers across Ireland and Northern Ireland. We are committed to delivering reliable, emissionscompliant power generation that supports critical infrastructure, as well as ambitious growth sectors such as data centres.”

“With grid pressures intensifying due to limited capacity and the rapid growth of data centres and EV charging infrastructure, Ireland is facing a perfect storm, and our customers are looking for power solutions that combine reliability, compliance and efficiency. I’m excited to help deliver Caterpillar’s comprehensive diesel generator range to meet these demands, from versatile standby units to missioncritical prime power systems. We are well positioned to support the region’s transition with responsive service, technical expertise and tailored power solutions.”.
