Options For Mining

Options for Mining

Increased productivity and profit come from machines tailored to material and job conditions. So, we've developed a wide range of Cat GET that work together to suit your particular mining requirements.

Track-type Tractors

When it comes to mining, no machines bear the burden like big dozers. Whether it's cleaning around shovels, pushing scrapers, pioneering roads, dozing spoil and overburden, or ripping ore and rock, Cat has superior GET that are up to the task.

To protect critical wear areas, the Caterpillar exclusive Abrasion Resistant Material (A.R.M.) is available on a variety of wheel loader, track-type tractor, and loader GET.

Dozer Heavy Duty Mining GET

Designed for D11 SU, D10 SU, 824 and 834 dozer blades, these have a thicker edge and flush end bits for severe mining applications. Intended for push dozing applications, these should not be used where penetration is important.

Edge and End Bit Systems Include:

  • Dozer Cutting Edges. Available for all Cat dozers, tough DH-2 steel means longer wear life in high or low impact applications. DH-3 steel, offered for D10 and D11 SU and U dozer blades, resists softening in high-heat applications.
  • Multi-Section Cutting Edges. Each section can be switched, propelled, or replaced individually for top wear life. Optional thicknesses for each dozer model provide balance between edge life and production.
  • Three End Bit Options. These help protect blade corners. General Duty end bits preserve cutting edge corners in general dozing applications. Extended Wear Life end bits are best suited to highly abrasive conditions. Utility end bits help solve the problem of face wear.
  • Blade Protection Options. Wear plates, push plates, and wear bars protect the blade in conditions that yield high abrasion, impact, and push forces.
  • Rippers. Efficient ripping requires tractive effort, but it also demands the right ripping angle, the right number of shanks, and the right spacing. The right GET can make your ripping more productive and cost effective.
  • One-Piece Shanks. For large production rippers offer improved heel clearance and more strength because there's no weld joint. Fully machined surfaces provide a tighter fit between shank, tip, and protector for less movement and longer tip life.
  • Shank Protectors. Extend shank life on large production rippers. Extended shank protectors are available for highly abrasive or deep ripping.
  • Ripper Tips. Most big rippers come in both centerline and penetration styles. Both have a center rib to add strength and promote self-sharpening. Centerline tips are reversible for longer life. Cat ripper tips come in more than one length to suit a variety of applications. Tips bonded with Abrasion Resistant Material (ARM) can last five times longer than standard components.
  • Replacement Adapters and Noses. Available for most large ripper assemblies, replacement adapters and noses help reduce repair costs. There's no need to replace entire ripping assemblies because damaged noses and adapters can be replaced separately.

Motor Graders

The cutting edges on motor graders take the punishment of high speed, high abrasion, and hard-packed surfaces. So, it's critical to productivity and low maintenance costs to have GET that can withstand tough, challenging conditions. To tackle the challenge, Caterpillar offers cutting edge systems with flat and curved cutting edges. Flat edges are strong with the most wear material, while curved edges optimize penetration. Serrated edges are perfect for penetrating frozen or hard-packed surfaces.

Moldboard End Bits protect the end of the moldboard from wear and damage, and are recommended for all applications.

Overlay End Bits protect cutting edge ends from excess wear in applications that cause corners to wear first.

Ripper Tips augment the processing of surface material. They can also help prepare work areas for loaders, trucks, and other machinery.

Cat GraderBit Systems penetrate compacted surfaces to a controlled depth and eliminates ruts and potholes. Even ice and compacted snow proves no match.

Cat GraderBits mount on adapters that bolt to the grader moldboard. The adapters, designed specifically for mine roads, have wide spaces to allow for adequate flow-through of large aggregate. The tips are made of hard tungsten carbide to provide long life in tough conditions

Cat GraderBit Systems offer a variety of bit and adapter options that can be tailored to any specific road conditions. Using all standard GraderBits provides optimum penetration and allows larger fines to pass through the gaps for a textured surface. Alternate standard and wide GraderBits leave smaller gaps, screening out smaller material and creating a smoother surface.

Loaders

When a loader is used for tough mining work, it must have bucket edges, tips, and adapters that apply its full working force. Cat Systems are built with rugged durability - to take that kind of punishment in a variety of applications.

To protect critical wear areas, the Caterpillar exclusive Abrasion Resistant Material (A.R.M.) is available on a variety of wheel loader, track-type tractor, and loader GET.

The 994 Mechanically Attached Adapter System (MAA) is designed to give versatility to machines in the field. The MAA has two tip options and no welded adapters. Independent pin-on components make for fast changes. The deep spade edge increases penetration to optimize work output.

The Rock Bucket System is designed for greater protection in tough, high abrasion applications. The system makes use of quick-change, bolt-on, and pin-on components including independently attached edge covers for high protection, optimum wear life, and maximum uptime. This is available for 988, 990, 992 and 994 models and as a replacement for the Modulok System.

The Heavy Duty Mining System is designed to give versatility to machines in the field. The MAA has two tip options and no welded adapters. Independent pin-on components make for fast changes. The deep spade edge increases penetration to optimize work output.

The Heavy Duty Quarry Bucket System, available on 980, 988, 990 and 992, is tailored to larger loaders in mining applications. Cat offers a complete Heavy Duty Quarry Bucket System that delivers strength and durability while reducing downtime and operating costs. A Heavy Duty Quarry Bucket is enhanced with a liner, as well as inner, outer, upper, and lower side wear plates. These combine with the skid plates to shield high-wear areas and add strength while holding weight gain to a minimum.

The Modulok System is built for 994, 992, 990, and 988 rock buckets working in extreme abrasive conditions. Quick-change, bolt-on, and pin-on components provide near-complete protection to the base edge and corners. Changes can be made quickly and easily in the field due to its modular design.

Base Edges and Segments

  • Base Edges are the integral part of the bucket used as a platform upon which to install the appropriate GET for the application.
  • Bolt-on Edges are available to protect the base edges of most rock buckets. They're fast and easy to replace - and can usually be propellered to extend wear life.
  • Bolt-on Edge Segments bolt directly to the base edge to prevent scalloping between teeth. They share the digging load so tip and adapter life is extended.
  • Bolt-on Half Arrow Segments create a sharper leading edge than flat segments. They protect the bevel and leading edge of the base edge and lead to improved bucket penetration and capacity.
  • Weld-on Half Arrow Edges enhance penetration and contribute more wear material. These edges can help increase bucket capacity.
  • Mechanically Attached Wear Plates. This patented, hammer-free wear protection system for buckets consists of a weld-on base plate, patented compression retainer and replaceable wear blocks in standard and heavy-duty thicknesses. This wear protection features quick, easy and safe replacement.
  • Tips & Adapters. To better match buckets to specific materials - long, short, penetration, heavy-duty long, and heavy-duty abrasion tips are available. For extreme abrasion conditions, the Heavy Duty Long Life Tip offers even greater life and enhanced performance. Whether users want a smooth bucket bottom, increased strength and retention, or maximum bucket penetration, Caterpillar offers a variety of weld-on, flushmount, two-strap (STD & HD), and bottom-strap adapters for Cat Rock Bucket Systems.

Mining Shovels

The Caterpillar 5110, 5130 and 5230 Hydraulic Mining Shovels are built tough to handle the heaviest work in the pit. When coupled with the Mining Edge Guard System (MEGS), they have the versatility to maintain high production levels in demanding applications.

The One-Piece Tip System (MEGS). This one-piece system of pin-on Ground Engaging Tools aids penetration for greater productivity. It also protects the sides and edges of the buckets, even between bucket tips. All MEGS tips are made from DH-3 steel to resist softening in high-heat applications. Only the adapters are welded on. And MEGS pin-on components can be quickly changed or rotated at the site. This reduces downtime, saves money, and improves production to help achieve the optimal cost per ton (CPT).

Mining Edge Guard System (MEGS) Two-Piece Tip System. This two-piece system has a coupler component between the tip and the adapter. The result is that the tip stays smaller and sharper and has less throw-away material. The coupler/adapter and coupler/tip connections are top pinned for fast, easy removal or installation. Cat offers independent pin-on tips — short tips for high-impact applications and general purpose tips for most other applications. All tip options are made of DH-3 steel for maximum durability. There is also a one-piece penetration tip for harder-to-penetrate conditions. Wear-protection packages are available.

The MEGS System is flexible. For example, in light or low abrasive materials, you can customize a system by operating without installing edge covers or sidebar protectors. That makes for high work output at the lowest cost.
